Giving a presentation can be one of the most nerve wrecking experiences a person can have. People who are fearful of presenting far outweigh those who are confident of presenting. Even the most confident of presenters will confess to being nervous even if they don’t show it outwardly. They have simply learnt how to handle their nerves.

Here are some tips to handing nerves when presenting….

  • It’s natural to have nerves….the audience often don’t notice your nerves and as most people are nervous when presenting they will be willing you on.
  • Make sure you have plenty of time to set up at the beginning. Being organised will help you to feel calmer.
  • Have key prompt cards……cards are better than paper as they are easier to keep in your hands and don’t waft around.
  • The more you practise the less your nerves will be – try recording yourself and playing back to yourself time and time again.
  • Visualising yourself delivering a fantastic presentation can create positive energy.
  • Creating a positive statement as a mantra – e.g. “I am a brilliant presenter” and repeating over and over again reinforcing the message in your mind.
  • Be aware of your breathing and practise breathing deeply and slowly. This can help slow down a pounding heartbeat.
  • Preparing yourself mentally for all eventualities can help…..just thinking through worse case scenarios can dilute the fear.

and finally if all else fails…..

  • Some people like to imagine the audience is naked! This reminds you that the audience are human just like you!
