Ten ways to get a new job in difficult times
Time to Reflect:
Are you doing all you can do to take control of your working life?
Ten ways to get a new job in difficult times
- Keep applying for advertised vacancies where your skills fit or you can cover 80% of the job description.
- Regularly re-contact all formal sources – the Jobcentre, private agencies, selection consultants and other employers
- Contact and network with former employers and colleagues, friends, friends-of-friends. Join online networking sites like Linkedin
- Try speculative letters to companies and organisations.
- Be able to offer – and deliver what employers want now and in the near future.
- Update your skills, improve your qualifications and ensure prospective employers know about this: they respect personal commitment to career development.
- Be bold – offer to do some research or project work for a company, this saves them time, and could lead to a permanent position.
- Be flexible – part time or temporary work can and does lead to full time opportunities.
- Have you covered all angles? Could your skills and experience transfer into a related job area you haven’t yet considered.
- Review your progress with a mentor / coach – could you improve on your C.V., interview skills, self-presentation etc?
